One major statewide law signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo on April 2017, and only recently implemented, is the Raise the Age juvenile justice law. This follows the lead of many other states in taking 16- and 17-year-olds from adult criminal courts and prisons and placing them within the juvenile court system.
The second-to-last state nationwide to take such a step, New York diverges from some states in its decision that felony cases will be originated within newly formed youth sections of the adult court. These present the possibility of subsequently being removed to family court.
Such removal is automatic in all nonviolent felony cases, unless the prosecutor is able to make a convincing case before the judge, with family courts differing from the adult court as being rehabilitation-oriented.
